Maryland Congressman Chooses Trump Over His Constituents
My Spy Column for March 5, 2025
Andy Harris (R), a far-right anesthesiologist, has represented the First Congressional District of Maryland since 2011. Harris has consistently chosen Donald Trump and his MAGA movement, over the needs of his constituents, a loyalty that earned him the Chairmanship of the right-wing House Freedom Caucus.
Unlike Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), Paul Goser (R-AZ) and the now departed (from Congress) Matt Gaetz (R-FL), Harris does not regularly make a fool of himself, most of the time. One exception was his attempt to carry a loaded handgun onto the floor of the House of Representatives. That stunt earned him the title, Andy “Handgun” Harris. The Congressman says he forgot he was carrying the weapon.
My weekly column in Spy Community Media’s Maryland Eastern Shore newspapers focused on “Handgun” Harris. I focused on Harris’ support for extending the Trump tax cuts, which contradicts his claimed support for reducing the federal debt, and his failure to call out Donald Trump after Trump abused Ukrainian President Vlodymyr Zelenskyy in the Oval Office on February 28.
Harris is the former co-chair of the House Ukraine Caucus. His mother was Ukrainian.

Is Andy Harris representing Maryland or Donald Trump?
